Bad Education BBC3 Racist Sitcom

Bad Education is a BBC3 sitcom written by Jack Whitehall, set in Abbey Grove School, a fictional state secondary school overrun with puerile predictable yawn-festing caricatures - the draconian deputy headmistress, the dexterously challenged teacher and the delinquent school children. Comatosed by this worthless piece of impoverished white-centric 'comedy' writing, any eye twitching interest is limited to the racist portrayal of Chinese student Jing played by Kae Alexander.

Racially humiliating the Chinese for the pleasure of generating cheap laughs for the White audience is considered ironic cutting edge British comedy. Bad Education's Facebook fan base (predominantly White, some Black) were highly amused by the Sinophobia...'that was so funny!'
It begs a question, why do British East Asian actors continually play these racially debilitating roles? Is she blonde? 'She's Chinese you muppet!' Really? With a 'Chinese' name like 'Kae Alexander,' we shouldn't really be surprised by the actions of these white-loving anglicized Asians, should we? (Bad Education Review by BBCZeitgeist)

  1. Reminded me of the Asian-American actress who played the rice-paddy person in Pete Hoekstra's campaign ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkQAalcsg5E

Is the lotus flower bit meant to be ironic, or what?

    1. Did you watch it? bad education had two racist scenes in the first episode. the first is in the clip above and the second at the parents evening meeting where he put his palms together to greet the chinese girls parents and did a bonging cymbal motion with his hands. This is suppose to be orientalist ironic comedy?

    2. I only watched the preview you linked. I meant ironic in that they're poking fun at the stereotypes, but we obviously know it's not, I just said it as a joke.

    3. Only 2 min in, and what a surprise, the Chinese schoolgirl is typecast as the nerdy teacher's pet.

Like I mentioned some time ago, this is one of the reasons I hardly watch television. 30 min of my life watching this or doing something else.

  2. I don't see the logic in the Chinese girl talking to the teacher in Chinese, when her English is fluent, unless it's just to further the outsider/foreigner status of Chinese. They don't get the black kids to speak Swahilli or Yoruba.

    1. Of course this show is 'just' entertainment and unashamedly makes few demands on its viewers. It shouldn't be too surprising then, in the context of such an easy to digest sitcom, that hardly any of it makes any sense, that most of the jokes can be seen coming a mile off, and that almost every classroom scene leans heavily on this "high-flying Chinese girl outsmarts ignorant white male teacher" gag (hooray: two stereotypes for the price of one!). However it is surprising coming from an organisation as obsessively politically correct as the BBC.

Also weirdly jarring is the misrepresentation of Tring - a small town with an overwhelmingly white population - as being extremely ethnically diverse. Why make the decision to set the action in a real place and then deliberately distort the makeup of the community?

Anyone who knows Tring, or is a pupil or parent at its real secondary school might wonder if the BBC is not so subtly pursuing an agenda here...which again, makes the facile characterisation of the one and only Chinese student even more glaringly noticable.

  3. Let me guess (since I can't bring myself to watch youth TV) it's another piece trying to be edgy by being offensive as possible. This is the new cool. But selective subjects, please note.

The truth of the matter is, today's BBCs will end up speaking like the streets when they attend such schools anyway, or an FOB will have ended up in private education, so none of it seems edgy. If anything, it's lame stereotyping by a director's view probably based on his era of schooling, and it shows by the sounds of things. SF.

has brief intro of her saying that she 'took the liberty of doing the form register for you',then says something in mandarin to which the teacher replies ' your language is very beautiful but it means nothing to me'

is that funny? racist? or just 'meh'?

    Yes stereotypical teacher's pet.

Couldn't find the parent's evening clip with the gong that you mentioned. Which link is it?

Glossing through the snippets, the whole series comes across as a bit forced, reminds me of that 2003 film called School of Rock with American comedian Jack Black.

This, not really interesting at all, and if it's ironic, this hipster irony style has been done to death, they need a new twist on it.

RE: Kae Alexander she doesn't look like a eurasian, and if she is she must be another gok wan. Didn't see enough of her to consider her white-loving, apart from being stereotyped and model minority and the only ethnic in an all white class.

    2. Well according to her actors profile

      http://www.kaealexander.com/

she speaks Cantonese, English, Japanese, Mandarin, although none of them are highlighted as her mother tongue. Doesn't say what her ethnic background is.

Shes also graduated from Guildhall school of music and drama where they line up Asian actors to be shot for stereotypical roles on brit tv:

      http://www.gsmd.ac.uk/acting/final_year_actors/graduates_2010_11/kae_alexander/

Yes its possible she wants to be accepted in a white world, however as an ethnic actor for white-centric british tv, its also possible she desperately wants to be taken seriously and not just typecasted by the sinophobic media as some oriental slut, geek etc. Guess that one backfired too eh

      Delete
    3. As I already said Mixed East Asian is the most likely ethnicity, if shes mixed East Asian -for example half Chinese half Jap, she wont have 'a' mother tongue. You know as well as I do that the BEA art world is overrun with (delete as appropriate)...white-loving/anglicized/mixed ethnicity/gays.

      Delete
    4. Yes any of the combination of the above makes sense she would be mixed race asian or adopted because a full-blooded Chinese would probably get pissed off about having to accept a part in a scene to represent a Japanese.

And most adopted Chinese don't have connections to any Chinese people on a daily basis and almost certainly choose not to in high society white-centric Britain esp the acting industry.

On another note, I wonder about the other two who agreed to play her parents.

'yes we want you to sit there and gawp as the teacher clasps his hands together, bows and hits a gong mocking your race'

Must be a bunch of clueless FOB actors.

British Chinese are so fucking clueless when it comes to sinophobic western media

    6. I've asked around, I was right, Kae Alexander is indeed half Japanese half Chinese. Her real name is Kae Yukawa, She has Japanese father and She was born in Japan. Makes her role in Bad education even more ironic doesn't it - especially the wearing of the rising sun headband.

Here's Donnie Yen on refusing Hollywood, yes, he is rolling in China money, but this is the right idea.

Tough for working actors, but this carrot on the stick approach gets a bit long in the tooth after a while, they should just get normal jobs or go to China to find work. Donnie Yen is classified as American Chinese, btw, even though he has Guangdong ancestry and worked in HK for many years.

    3. i would rather see western born asian actors simply refuse racially degrading and or stereotypical work. However, that seems to never be the case. Hollywood, would then be forced to use white actors in yellowface. Maybe only then people will finally get a clue.

I actually would find this highly amusing if they had to do this. Check out Jim Sturgess's schtick in yellowface in the new Cloud Atlas trailer.

In cricket, there's a technique in bowling called the "Chinaman", which must date back to colonial times, and it's words like that where we need to reference it to. State that if that had fallen out of favour due to the more sensitive nature of racial stereotyping, then so should the words Chinaman. SF.

  9. I have been reporting racism for years. From news papers to the BBC. It is somewhat tiresome how a new-wave of so-called younger directors who feel it necessary to use stereotyping to gain cheap laughs. Due to the small Chinese population, we are easy targets. Newer FOBs arriving here to study/live will be oblivious to this kind of generalisation. This is left to a few concerned BBCs.

In recent times, I also see a big attempt by the media to state that China or the Chinese are easily offended. This is so wrong and directly misleading. Instead of speaking up, the media are reporting China as tetchy and over-sensitive. I find that the biggest factor that needs to be put right. SF.

  10. I've noticed that too, of course you have quite a lot of old racists, set in their ways, but then there are the young (outside of the EDL/BNP type) who get kicks out of casual racism - but here's the thing - only towards Chinese. They seem far more sensitive towards blacks and asians. I'd like to know the reasoning for this. Have we just been left behind in the racial equality movement? Or is it that whites simply have no respect for us compared to blacks and asians? After all, we're the least likely to shank them or shoot them or launch a fatwa on them if we get racial abuse.

Another reason is that British Born Chinese lack a gang culture, prevalent in black and asian gangs... so when one is picked on, they group together and form a united front. We have none of that. Another factor is seeing Chinese women wanting and prone to be whitewashed, compared to black and asian women who are more resilient and proud of their roots... all these factors (and more if you have any suggestions) push the notion of ethnic Chinese as easy prey, both for racism in media, racial slurs and in normal social life.

  11. Anonymous16/08/12:13:50, that's my point, we are not easily offended, but if we finally speak out, we are reported as easily offended. It means we are not supposed to have a voice.

I remember even seeing headlines hinting how China was 'bullying' others, and it was in relation to correcting a mistake made by the western media. China is now a bully.

As for fun, well is Jackie Chan to blame? It's very easy to compartmentise a culture down to a few films, especially if nothing else has been a commercial success since. SF.

    1. Regarding the Citizen Khan complaints. It's actually small compaired to the Muslim population in this country, but note that this had been flagged up by the national media straight away because right now, there has been an agenda to repeat again and again, how sensitive Muslims are, and not really about general rights of Muslims. Of course, a complaint whether one or thousands is still a complaint.

BBC gave the 'stock' answer as they do with all so-called modern comedy. The national media interest works well because the whole comedy centralises on a Muslim family whereas Bad Education starts on BBC3 and there's one particular character that has been complained about, therefore it will not make a dent for the national media interest.

I personally believe that the second commission is a nod in the direction of making comedy that likes to enforce stereotypes. It's been seen as edgy and trendy to do so. Like a silent two fingers up at the establishment who told us for years stereotyping is bad for you.

I noticed this trend for the last five years. Both Channel Four with Shameless and shows like Bad Education are now regarded as great because they go back to the seventies style of comedy. SF.

    2. @BBCz

The reply I got was to the effect of ' it's okay to make fun of Chinese because sinophobic jokes are affectionate and part of British culture. And lampooning brits as racist justifies portraying anti-Chinese scenes of 'comedy'for school children to lap up.

And some people on here wonder why we make 'anti-semitic' comments about British media ownership. Oh no, don't complain about Jews owning the media, that's so wrong! Even though it's true!

But Chinese? Pile on the 'affectionate' racism!

British Chinese not complaining in numbers is just the same as some white-privilege hoodie skav pulling his eyes at you laughing with his mates 'jokily' as we shrug it off.

And thanks to the BEEB jew-run media looks like Britain is 'programming' another generation of sinophobic brits.

    1. Tanskeh, isn't it simply racial stereotyping? Whilst it's blatantly obvious when negative remarks are made about black pupils being the more backward bunch in the class, would that make it through the final cut? I think you'll find it a no because it's negative and it's offensive.

But because the oriental looking student is brainy, it's suddenly seen as smart and good for the Chinese. That's just a false shorterm form of ignorance that enforces rather than challenges the trend of accepting we are simply humans who can be thick as two planks too.

Also, the 'comedy' just wouldn't get the belly laughs if the student had been a BBC pupil where she doesn't get to speak under her breath in Chinese but in English without any accent. It's about keeping oriental people in their time and place, to be pigeon-holed in a time so the mainstream cannot picture BBC as normal run-of-the-mill British students/pupils. That is racial stereotyping, and has far more lasting effects than one short bout of name-calling. SF.

Typical, you're in a position of power within western society, being a white male, yet the only thing you can do is belittle ethnic minority's problems, such as by completely ignoring the massive discrepancies between the amount of BBCw in IR relationships the amount of of BBCm in IR relationships and how the western media plays a massive role in promoting this disparity through insidious stereotypes and orientalist propaganda such as here.

  23. Personally (having watched the entire series) I think the jokes revolving around the Chinese student are in no way racist. The joke is on the character of the teacher, Ying is shown to be intelligent, witty and amusing. The humour comes from the teacher's patronising manner and his assumption that because Ying speaks another language she is stupid, when she is in fact far clever than him and makes jokes at his expense. Just because jokes are based around race is doesn't mean they are racist or offensive, the jokes in question are making fun of the teacher's ignorance, not the fact that Ying is Chinese.

That's just my view, and I don't want to force it on you or say that I am correct, I just thought I'd input on the debate.

    1. Matt, I have a problem with that because it's the racial stereotype that has been bandied about for years, and still the same decades later. Just because she is smart or intelligent, it's nonetheless a stereotype. When will we see comedy when a BBC can be accepted as average like all other indigenous Brit? Oriental looking people are normally only fired to be a baddy spy or a particular character that requires the heritage to be central to the role. This continuous process means, BBCs will never be accepted as the norm, but a newly arrived immigrant with pidgin style English. SF.

    3. Well, put it this way, theres one other ethnic character in Bad education, the mixed race white/black gay student. Now, has his 'race/ethnicity' been poked at in the programme? I stopped watching Bad education after the first episode, but I'm guessing they left him his ethnciity well alone. Hes 'British,' 'hes one of us,' lets leave him alone and hes black, we can't attack that, that'll be considered too racist to attack black or mixed blacks. So this isn't equal opportunities racism, this is specifically targeting groups that are safe to attack. Chinese are one of the easiest and safest racial groups to lazily stereotype and casually racially abuse and get away with it. You can see why the Chinese character was chosen and what hes trying to do with the character, its an incredibly two dimensional lazy stereotype.

It can be argued all the characters are two dimensional lazy stereotypes, sure, but I'm Chinese, I'm only interested in Chinese representation. if gays are offended or not, if the disabled are offended or not, if teachers are offended or not, thats their own issue, I'm only interested in Chinese perspectives.

    4. BBC3 is targeted towards teenagers and students, that their primary audience, now IF the joke is ONLY on the teacher, why is it then that the character is so loved by its audience? Hes not a hate figure.

I've seen an literally endless number of tweets posted by white and black schoolkids saying that they want this character as their real life teacher. Does that sound like a hate figure to you? That sounds like an idol, not a hate figure. They think its funny that a white teacher can overtly stereotype and racially mock Chinese students and Chinese people, they think sinophobia is funny, thats why they laugh at it. The teacher is so popular because hes sinophobic - so whose the joke on again?

      Delete

    6. Anonymous 30/09/12:21:27, the problem lies with the Chinese characters still being 'props'. Is it not true that Kae Alexander's existence is simply due to her ethnicity? She is not there on any kind of merit. The show centres on a teacher who is very similar to Jade Goody. Jade was ignorant, racist and highly offensive, yet she made millions from that. Did he look at that and thought "I could do that."

Jack Whitehall's creation is just another extention of Britain's obsession with people who are prejudiced and wrong. It's reverse psychology. The central character is the star, the 'wronged' star. The fact that the anti-hero could be racist and ignorant says it's glamourisation of people who are like that. It is also normalising this kind of behaviour instead or shaming them, these so-called edgy comedians put them on a platform.

Further from that, the BBC allows for offensive cmbol noises and the dreaded Japanese flag on a Chinese person's head is total disregard to the many who still feel strongly about the war and the dead. I believe that this is totally disrespectful of the Chinese people to be honest. And the fact that not enough BBCs stand up and make a point is so sad, and has allowed these shows to continue with their offensive rubbish.

I put it to you, how many comedians will still use the old colongial times slave stereotypes for jokes? I think you'll find it could be used, but it's never used anymore. How many will joke about calling people the wrong names because all black people look the same?

Jack Whitehall makes the classic mistake of assuming less Chinese people living in Britain equals less progression on how they should be represented. Now that he is apparently dating a BBC, I hope to see more decent comedy rather than lazy dated stereotypes. SF.

    1. Thing is not only Chinese campaigned against Hoekstra's ad, a large portion of the Asian-American community did as well, but Chinese are the only significant East Asian ethnic group in the UK, it would be next very unlikely the same can happen here.

    2. Lisa Chan is a seminal case, should be cited more often, esp to cynics.
Whilst its easy to slate the Beeb. It takes two to tango, without Kae Alexander in the picture in the first place then none of this fiasco would of happened. My point is does she care? or has any interest in future prevention? NO, Sadly many chinese and mixed race chinese are all to willing to lower themselves in unflattering offensive roles and speech, burt kwouk has been doin that same accent from james bond, banzai, spirit warriors (a chinese cast!!??!). do they care? probably not only if it their paycheck and close family, there is no real love or responsibility for the whole chinese community. That jason viet x-factor guy what does he care he doesn't live or born in the UK, so if there there is racism, it doesn't affect him deeply cuz in the end he's leavin the uk.

    3. Anonymous 26/09/12:00.44, it's very possible that this Kae Alexander is adopted as mentioned previously on this topic. If that were the case, she would not experience or understand fully the intricate details of stereotypes. She might even think it quaint, playing the brainy oriental pupil.

I have met adopted Chinese women. There is a vacancy about them. Perhaps the previleges given to them allows them to sail through life unscaved by institutionalised racism and casual racism. Many are essentially white and do not recognise their ethnicity other than the outer shell, which is the plain reason Kae gets this role in the first place. Very often, in middle-class circles, the exotic nature is considered good topics at dinner tables, and I'm sure Kae Alexander will find it amusing rather than offensive, because her parents will have seen things that way themselves. SF.

    4. How about that. Apparently, Jack whitehall the so-called writer to this third-rate ironic drama/comedy is apparently going out with a BBC named Gemma Chan. Perhaps she can provide him much needed re-education about stereotypes that are supposed to be ironic but really dated and 'ironically'no longer ironic. SF.

      Delete
    5. SF no disrespect but Gemma Chan from what ive gathered is a whiteworshipping slut, climbing her way in acting world by bedding white males to improve her desperate career. However I'm happy to be proven wrong on this fact.

    6. Happybritishchinese, I've never heard of her until recently. When I researched a bit, it seems she has ditched an Oxbridge degree with a placement in Law for acting. Apparently, she's been in Sherlock Holmes and a few bits and pieces. I can't comment on her whiteworshipping side since I can see that she has taken what roles she can get, pretty much like other BBCs. SF.

      Delete
    7. Did you research what roles she took?

    8. Happybritishchinese, please don't go down that route again. We've been there before and you know that I feel that too much is placed on an individual's fight against prejudices etc. It's hard work in acting, and her only fault is to go into the business in the first place.

If she was to turn down roles, she'll probably get no work. You know what will be next, we'll start seeing Eurasians and white women painting their skins yellow to fill the roles.

If you keep on like that, then it's going to be 99% of BBCs are sell-outs by the looks of things. The key is re-education for a lot of BBCs, and until that happens, and creating awareness, not much will change. SF.

    9. Yes her fault was going into the business in the first place. But now shes in it and theres no remorse for namecalling her because she agreed to portray herself that way until the racist agenda changes its mind. How long is a piece of string?

Until that day, with the perpetual carrot on the stick, there is no way for BBC female actors to 'make it ' except to fuck their way to the top in a white centric racist system.

And as you know, Chinese only go where the money is, and what guilt should there be when the majority of FOBS dont even recognise race as an important element?

She will never contribute anything to BBC community and even if she wanted to we dont even have a backbone worth supporting in the first place. the only change as ive suggested time and again is our own media, but in typical Chinese way everyones gawping at each other to make the first move and then shoot them down when its 'not good enough'We are our own worst enemy.

    10. Gemma Chan is a BEA actress just like Kae Alexander, pretty much all 'East Asian' actresses who live or work in the west date/marry non-ethnic Chinese.

Wouldn't surprise me if Gemma Chan partly wrote the script for him or at least gave him the idea for the Character. She probably wears that withdrawn racist Victorias secret geisha outfit for him too when they're having sex.

    11. Re: Gemma Chan. I saw her on a BBC mini series written by the same writer as The Street (I think)... it's certainly in the same style - every day in one week (just the one week) it's a fictional "life" story. The one Gemma was in she starred - guess what - as a mail order bride! But from HK, lol... marrying a sad white (obv) old bastard who was divorced and a bit desperate (as his onscreen daughter said). If Gemma had a soul, she must be ruing the day she left Law school and conformed to racial stereotypes just to get her Z list acting career.

    13. Yeah thats how they met, they started dating after working together on set.

Most of these actors are mercenary and dont give two hoots about stereotypes, they often say playing these negative roles is a challenging liberating role for them and makes them a better actor. Even white actresses have no problems playing hookers and pole dancers, so why would BEA actress be any different?

    14. Incidently, Jack whitehall went to the same boarding school as Kate Midldeton, which charges £31,350 per annum. Gemma Chan ex-Oxbridge is 5 years older than him, these women who date guys younger than them are usually cougar sluts. Look at these types of media women who always date younger guys, Kelly Brook, Madonna, Sadie Frost, Demi Moore etc. All well known sluts.

This is interesting. Today, comedian Frankie Boyle wins £54,000 libel damages from Daily Mirror after newspaper calls him 'racist'

MGN had said that Boyle exploited negative stereotypes of black people for “cheap laughs”.

No doubt, similar to Jack Whitehall, their defence is that using a 'character' (racism by proxy) to express racial stereotypes for cheap laughs is fine.

'Boyle told the High Court that characters he played might express racist views, but he did not.'

Frankie Boyle says that he campaigns against racism haha! So does John Terry! John Terry wears the kick racism out of football armband! Jack Whitehall will say I cant be racist, I is f*cking Gemma Chan! Gok Wan will say, I cant be racist Im half chinky!

    1. What gets me is that because 'racism' is such a bandied around buzzword by whites in the media, it dilutes the seriousness of ethnic groups such as us who want to be taken seriously.

Chinese/China really need to play catch up, and learn to become racially alert. IMO thats something that this blog, and us BBCs and individuals can create - racial awareness. And If Chinese women weren't fucking around so much with white males, our ethnic solidarity would be strengthened and taken more seriously. Other issues like geographic dispersal and social identity can then be worked on. But as you say, white males can say I'm not racist because i'm fucking Gemma Chan.

  27. @happybritishchinese - You do yourself and your arguments a terrible disservice when you spout ill-considered bile such as: "Gemma Chan from what ive gathered is a whiteworshipping slut, climbing her way in acting world by bedding white males to improve her desperate career".

That sort of nasty comment betrays an embittered soul and is every bit as offensive as the topic under discussion here. It is also actionably libellous.

I would agree that the 'Ying' character is extremely stereotypical and uncomfortable to watch, but what I find even more disturbing are the openly and seriously xenophobic and racist attitudes on display in many of the topics above, as if two wrongs make a right.

It seems you haven't yet worked out that racism is borne from the belief that one's own 'race' is somehow different, special or superior to that of others. Phrases such as 'whiteloving' and 'no real chinese' are utterly hypocritical. Unless you are doing some world-class trolling.

I assume your username is ironic.

    1. What is ironic are white males being racist to the same race they are in an intimate relationship with.

I suppose this goes in line with what others have been saying about the lack of retaliation from chinese males, for example black men have been aggressive and vocal as a minority in white nations, at the same time they frequently pair off with white girls whilst having low amounts of black women pairing off with white men. This also applies to a lesser extent with asians, the men are free to pair with white women whilst not many white men are with asian women.

you cannot deny there is a correlation between the aggression levels of the men and the interracial frequency of their female counterparts

    2. Oh dear, not this libel legal bullshit again. read the updates on the law and how the judiciary have advised the police how to handle online comments.

Of course another irony is that you say that racism "is borne from the belief that one's own 'race' is somehow different, special or superior to that of others"... indeed, so why is it that white men routinely see oriental women as easier partners than white women, unless they are racist themselves? Why do oriental women have different, lower standards for white men than their own?

That is your problem. You employ racism only when it doesn't suit you. What white men and oriental women are doing with regards to relationship preferences is subtle, behind the scenes yet equally if not more so as racist than any views shown here. Indeed, I have not read a single comment of a Chinese on this forum saying "get rid of all whites, etc" or of that nature, unlike the true racists who tend to be white

  30. If you don't get it, and "getting all your knickers in a twist" and start "writing essays", well, I am sorry, mate, you probably have never really integrated into this Country that is England in the first place.

If you cannot even abide such harmless "creatures of comedic entertainment" as Jack Whitehall, Gemma Chan and Sophie Wu, who are quite frankly, and let's face it, no Bernard Manning (if you had even heard of the name of this chap), then why torture oneself by living in a Country that you probably hate, and have never really considered to be truthfully your own? Why not make the next "annual" trip "home" permanent?

  31. What I think is brilliant is that you are all outraged at the portrayal of Kae as a chinese actress, when if you check her background she was actually born in Japan. Completely different countries and cultures.

  33. I think so too! The scene was obviously satirization because, as everyone who has watched the show might has noticed, Alfie isn't the brightest coin in the wallet. He makes stupid jokes ALL THE TIME. About everyone (Mitchell and his mom, duh).

The show underlines how bad such behavior is and discourages it. You can see how the student's face drops and they look annoyed or sad or both. If the whole thing was meant as an honest white privileged joke they wouldn't film that kind of reaction.
